ling World Championships
The Sailing World Championships are taking place in Aarhus, Denmark. Find out what it takes to be successful in the modern Olympic environment.
We’re midway through the Olympic cycle, and for fourteen days, the sailing world’s finest are gathered, looking for the chance to take home the coveted title of World Champion. Shirley Robertson finds out that’s not all that’s at stake during this fortnight, because these championships are one of the only times you’ll see all the Olympic Classes sailing at the same event. That means they’re also fighting for something else: the ultimate honour of Olympic qualification. During these two weeks decisions on funding for the next Games in Tokyo 2020 are being made and coaches are on the lookout for stand-out performances that will dictate who makes it onto the team. Shirley therefore spends time with some of the industry’s most recognised names, including the most successful sailor in Olympic history, Britain’s Ben Ainslie, to find out whether it’s innate talent, personality, funding, or a combination of all three that makes a gold medal-winning athlete.
